The other day I downloaded DopeWars for my iBook. The game is really addictive, and I think has some educational value – kids are responsible for growing $2000 into a large fortune. They can put money in the Bank, where it gets 10% return a day, or they can hold onto it, and risk it getting taken by the police. Despite the comic surface, I genuinely think this game teaches kids how to exploit market inefficiencies, how to manage risks, and how to buy commodities low and sell high. And yes, the game product need to be drugs, because no one would play a game where the price of haircare products differed from borough to borough.
Frustrated by low scores, I looked at the game’s code in an effort to take all of the luck/risk out of the game and turn it into a science. I’ve been looking at a lot of widget code in preparation for building my A’s widget. The code for any freeware widget is available, although hard to read (Search for the widget in Spotlight, then CTRL-click on it in a Finder window and click “Show package contents.” Then open up the file that ends in .js). So I found the code, which is kinda cool, and saves a lot of guesswork.
